Safety
Last updated:
Meeting new people carries risk, and we would rather say so plainly. This page covers what we do, what you can do, and where to go when something goes wrong.
If you are in danger now
Call your local emergency number first.
We are not an emergency service and nobody reads messages to us in real time. If a child is in danger, contact the authorities where you are before you contact us.
Report and block
- Block hides you and them from each other, and they are not told. Use it any time, for any reason.
- Report with Tell us what happened. You can do it from a message, a profile, a photo, a comment, an event or a group. You can block them in the same step.
- The person you report is not told it was you.
- Reporting something about a child comes first. Choose that reason and we put it ahead of everything else.
- Saying no is free. Declining someone is permanent, and they are not told you saw it.
Before you meet someone
- Start with a plan: something you would like to do. It tells you quickly whether you want the same thing.
- Talk first, and consider a video call, before you meet.
- Meet somewhere public, tell someone where you are going, and arrange your own way home.
- Keep your address, workplace and finances to yourself until you trust them.
- If something feels wrong, leave. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
Scams
We warn the person reading a message when we see a sign of a scam. You can ignore the warning, report the message or block the sender. The warnings are about these:
- Money. Do not send money to someone you have not met in person.
- Investments and crypto brought up by a stranger first.
- Gift cards. Nobody honest asks to be paid in them.
- Moving to another app straight away. You can say no and keep talking here.
- Links, and contact details sent early. Share yours when you are ready.
If someone threatens to share your pictures
You have not done anything wrong. This is a crime, and many people have been through it.
- Do not pay and do not reply. Paying rarely stops it.
- Keep screenshots of the messages, the account and any payment details.
- Block them and report them here with Tell us what happened.
- Use StopNCII.org to stop intimate images spreading online. If you were under 18 when the picture was taken, use Take It Down.
- Tell someone you trust, and report it to the authorities where you live.
Keeping your privacy while you use it
- We show your city and nothing finer. You choose, connection by connection, whether anyone sees a place.
- Notifications say New message and nothing more until you choose to show names. A lock screen is public.
- We cannot stop someone taking a screenshot of what you show them. Share only what you are comfortable with them keeping.
- Photos have their location data removed before they are stored.
If it is risky where you live
In some places being LGBTQ+, or having sex outside marriage, is a crime, and someone's phone can be inspected. We cannot make that safe. Think about who can pick up your phone, keep notifications generic, avoid photos that show your face or home, and weigh whether using any dating service is a risk you accept. You know your situation better than we do.
Drafting note: Counsel and the safety lead to confirm the wording of the safety notice for restrictive jurisdictions, and whether a discreet mode ships (docs/decisions.md, hostile countries).
